Charming cat Scrappy makes it to Face of Amazon Pets final

Scrappy, a striking black and white cat from Leeds, beat 28,000 entries across the UK to make it into the top seven of the Face of Amazon Pets competition.

The entries were whittled down to a shortlist based on the most likes on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Seven finalists — Effie the rabbit, Bob the dog, Scrappy the cat, Harry the pony, Sammy the bird, Rango the reptile and Arin the fish — were then voted for by Amazon customers and invited to a London studio where they were photographed and filmed doing their thing on a ‘Petwalk’, modelling popular pet products available from the Amazon Pets Store.

The Face of Amazon Pets judging panel included pet photographer Rachel Oates, who snapped each of the seven finalists, and owns Winny the corgi whose Instagram account @winnythecorgi has almost 24,000 followers. Jason Ashley, the proud owner Ramsey a Staffordshire Bull Terrier whose Instagram account @BlueStaffy has 146,000 followers, was the second judge, along with the top dog at Amazon Pets Store Melis del Rey, who is in charge of Amazon’s vast pet offering.

Animals of all of species, breeds and sizes entered the competition — but there could only be one winner.

“Pets are fast becoming the latest social media influencers to become Instafamous, amassing devoted followers worldwide and becoming genuine stars in their own right,” said Melis del Rey, Amazon Pets Store Manager. “We’re delighted to add Effie and the other six finalists to the list of gorgeous pets set for internet stardom and want to thank all of the many entrants for taking part in our Face of Amazon Pets competition.”

Scrappy, who made it to the final at the grand old age of 18, is from West Yorkshire. He was born completely black, but began developing white patches eleven years ago, giving him his unique look. His owner, David, believes he may have Vitiligo. Scrappy is already something of a pet celebrity in his own right, with over 46,000 followers on his Instagram account @seniorscrappy and Facebook.

Although he didn’t quite make it to the top spot (Effie the Mini Lop rabbit took the title of the Face of Amazon Pets), Scrappy obviously made a good impression, thanks to his striking features.

“The animals were true professionals on the shoot. It was such a joy to be part of the process and Effie is such a deserving winner,” said Rachel Oates, Face of Amazon Pets photographer and judge. Fellow judge Jason Ashley said, “Effie really has the star quality we were looking for in terms of look and personality and in true model form she was a bit of a diva during the photoshoot. Cara Delevingne’s pet bunny Cecil — who is a social media star in his own right — had better watch out!”
