5 tips to know when treating your dog

If you hace a dog, you should treat it everyday. But do you know when and how much you should reward your dog? Follow our guide on when to treat your pet.

1. Giving Treats

Treats can be a great tool for training.

One of the reasons treats work so well, is because, like humans, dogs are motivated by the idea of getting a treat! If using them to train your dog, remember that treats should be small, able to be given and eaten quickly so you can reward the behaviour and keep momentum up.

After a while, your dog will probably begin to try to figure out what they need to do to get a treat.

Otherwise, there may be other occasions in the day when you’d like to treat your dog – when you’re going out, when they’ve been good or sometimes, just because!

2. When to treat

If you are using treats as a training tool, the most ideal time to treat is between meals, as it’s much harder to train a dog after it’s just eaten.

3. What treat should you give your dog?

We recommend, when shopping for treats, that you look for Australian made products with real ingredients specially made for your dog. RUFFS have a great range of guilt free treats-explore the RUFFS range here.

Did you know that some human treats and foods may actually harm your dog?  Always check that the food in question is suitable for dogs and that you take into account any medical needs your dog has.

Always take your dog’s treat intake into account when measuring out your pet’s daily meals and reduce the amount fed accordingly so they don’t put on weight.

4. There’s a time and a place

Remember, dog treats are a reward for good behaviour. Always be consistent with how you administer treats and when to provide them, so as not to confuse your dog.

5. Ask an expert

Always remember that your dog’s nutritional needs will vary depending on their breed, age and health. If you are ever unsure what treat to give your dog, speak to your local vet or call the Purina PetCare Advice Team.
